Breath Hetal.
Let me start with this, If you really liked the way Uprooted (by Naomi Novik)was written, Air Awakens had a similar feeling.
Without giving too much away, Vhalla is a librarian apprentice who suddenly finds herself entangled with the heir to the kingdom (aka the fire lord.) He is not a good person and doesn't try to be so. He wants Vhalla for her power as a wind-walker. The first of her kind in almost two centuries. Vhalla has decisions to make. Does she want her newly found magic eradicated? Does she want to trust the crown prince? Does she want to stay a librarian apprentice?
I LOVED this book. The potential romance is slow burn, Vhalla doesn't just jump in all like "yay, magic! Let me roam around being reckless!" She genuinly maturely spends a large portion of the book thinking about if this is the right path for her. Once she chooses, she sticks to her guns and gets through everything being thrown at her. And believe me, she gets her share of shitstorm. And because she gets her shitstorm, just like the rest of us in life, we can relate to Vhalla so well. As a bookworm, she understands us and yearns for something i'm sure hits true in every reader's heart.
“I want a place you hardly dare to even whisper. I want the bravery to not only read, but to do. I want a man, not a library boy. A man who is tall and witty and knows more about the world than you would ever dare dream.”
I almost cried and felt a burning need in my heart when I realized I wouldn't be able to read the next book for almost 2 more months. Kill me. If you are looking for beautiful prose, just the right amount of world-building, complex, developing characters, and a twist or turn here and there on a magic chosen one story, you HAVE to pick up Air Awakens.
