First let me start of by saying the plot was good. It really was. Normal girl who, is not kick-ass and is thrown into a fantastical world due to the gift of some magical sight. She works for the Fae court and is in love with the King's sword master- who is also in love with her, but puts his duty over his love for her. Sucks to suck.
The problem with this book is, as a debut author, Sandy Williams doesn't have her shit together very well. She doesn't explain terms of the magical world well. Going into the second book, I still have a very vague understanding of what shadow reading is and how it works. She throws a lot of magical/made up terms for to build her world but doesn't explain any of them. For example, she never explains what "Luster Chaos" or "lightening" is, yet she abuses these terms till I wanted to pull my hair out. What I got from it is...something that happens on fae skin (and human- but humans without sight can't see it.) And it happens when emotions are high??? I don't even know if that's right.
She gives up on her 10 year love for the sword master - who admits he loves her and will give up everything for her NOW. Her response is No- You made me wait ten years. I don't care if I have (and still do) loved you for 10 years. I suddenly don't want you anymore because you made me wait. This other nice guy over here, no waiting. I like him now. argh. That was so stupid!!!!
Now, I'm into the second book, because the plot is decent. I can't guarantee I'll finish. I'm 30% in and it looks like it's going to go onto my DNF books, but we'll see.
I'm picky, but if you don't mind these miniscule details being messed up, give the book a try, it is really is a good time pass.
