Alexa, lost her parents and now, for survival, cross dresses as the best guard on Prince Damien's safety circle. She has always thought the Prince to be a brat and rude. However, when she loses the person she loves the most, she finds out she and the Prince are much more alike than she thought. But is that enough when he lies to her at every twist and turn?
sigh. I was expecting adventure! Thrill! Danger! Dramatic secret reveal!
What I got was a love triangle that we didn't even get to see developed. IT WAS JUST THERE.
"It's you, It's always been you."
SINCE WHEN DAMIAN? SINCE WHEN???
To make matters worse Alexa starts falling from him and then he lies to her. ABOUT EVERYTHING. Okay fine, he has his reasons, but then he gets pissy with her being upset for not being able to trust him.
"'Damian, I - I already do love you,' I whispered as a tear slipped down my cheek. 'For better or worse.'"
BITCH HE JUST LIED TO YOU. EXTENSIVELY. AGAIN. AND AGAIN. DO YOU EVEN KNOW HIM???
Okay, let's also talk about how everyone around Alex(a) knows she's a girl. Well, that was anti-climactic. SO she's a boy for like 20% of the book and thene veryone knows she's a girl. If you're looking for akick ass cross-dressing Mulan-like story. Don't look here.
Putting the flaws aside, the story was easy to follow, the world has the stereotypical "magic-is-bad ahh" setup, but it as done well I loved the side characters that allowed us to see different sides of Damian's personality, Lisbet and Jax to name two. Is it a page turner? Sometimes. The second half when secretts were slowly being revealed, I could not put my kindle down. The first half, albeit interesting can be a little frustrating because you have no idea what the fuck is going on.
Picked up the second book the moment I put Defy down at 3 am (alas, the life of an insomniac).
Defy is a quick read for light fantasy readers. Pick it up and give it a try!
