Cyrene becomes a prestigious affiliate after an uncalled for banter with the young king that could technically got her head chopped off. She had some strange people around her who turned into powerful and loyal allies.
It was frustrating, however, to see Cyrene bieng pulled here and there on the whim and plots of royalty-and she just had to kind of go with it
For the most part, I liked Edric but he seemed a bit hands off to the whole get shit done thing (kind of like another Prince we know from Red Queen
In the end- their paths had to diverge and I really can't see a lot of them working out in the next book. I can already feel the second-book syndrome coming. She knew almost from the get-go that she would need to leave Edric, but she got together with him anyway and made false promises and it...just wasn't healthy. Alas, as a hopeless romantic, I have hope for them, but that hope is not in book 2- if my thoughts are correct
I WILL be reading the next book, but probably closer to release of the 3rd book for fear of losing interest and never picking it up again. If anything else, This series has gorgeous covers and I am a cover-whore if nothing else.
