My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I had no idea what to expect going in as this was my first experience with the author. But dang if I wasn't absolutely addicted. The narrator was made to voice this book. She captured the main characters' personalities so perfectly I could see them in my mind.
Wren with a dark past.
Lucas with a family who he loves (mostly) but can't escape.
Hale, Calidus, just everyone was great, I mean except for the murderer obviously. Murder, wait what?
When Wren finds out she has magic that can be baked into yummy goodies, she is potched to the confectioner's guild, with an an oath made my magical wine to never tell anyone about her magic save for those who already know. However...things go wrong when her meeting with the guild head ends in his murder after eating one of her cupcakes to demonstrate her gift: good luck.
She is assigned to Hale and a mentor who will teach her how to control her gift, all while trying to discover the murderer with an enigmatic inspector named Lucas, who believes without a doubt that Wren is not the murderer.
If you like mystery, romance, magic, and well... all manner of dessert, this book is for you, especially if you're looking for an audiobook! And if you're not, I'd read it anyway!
