A tale of two sisters.
And some phoenixes.
And reincarnation.
Phoenixes supposedly died out long ago after the reign of Avalkira Ashfire.
That doesn't stop two sisters Val and Veronyka from looking for a phoenix egg. It's in their blood.
With Val carrying all the ferocity and Veronkya bearing the love and tenderness, things between the two sisters fracture when a phoenix chooses Veronkya.
Leaving Val's side for the first time, Veronyka cross dresses as a boy to infiltrate the phoenix rider gang, who only accept men. There, she meets Tristain who she forms a lasting friendship and trust with, that turns out to be much more than she ever imagined. Life could be good, but Val isn't going to let go of her sister so easily. They are twins, meant to be together. Or can Veronkya break the chains of fate?
This was pretty good, if not a little too dense. The author stayed true to Phoenix lore and incorporated it all pretty well. I liked the back story we got at the end where we understand (well as much as you can understand a power hungry psychopath) why Val is the way she is, though Veronyka's past is still a mystery.
Tristan was boring, but a necessary character to develop the plot and show Veronyka's character growth. I don't think the author meant to do that, but it definitely read that way.
