My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This was a very entertainig, if not also very dense read full of old America lingo.
Set in the time of hotsy totsies, prohibition, and what not, you get a real feel for how the world really was. Bray brings to life superstitions, sexism, racism, as well as many good things I won't name so you can discover them on your own.
Our main character, even, reads as fairly shallow in the beginning, but has more heart as time goes on. She learns to care for others and "develop" that caring.
Memphis' story was equally interesting. The ghosts of his past, his desperation to protect his brother and hide his own secrets all kept me coming back for more.
I couldn't really get into either of their romances. With all the time spent on plot and setting, both romances were vastly underdeveloped and, I think, could have been done away with entirely. I care more about the sibling relationship between Henry and Theta.
Memphis and Theta? Boring
Evie and Jericho? Snore
I'd definitely read the second book. I'd like to know what happens next with the mysterious diviners and the evil that has been set in motion.
