Yea, I dug it. It kept me riveted every step of the way.
Evie is all of us: a smart spitfire who doesn't believe in herself. Ever since her parents died, she has been at court. She is a winner Blair, 17 in line to the throne. She also has mutt magic: what people call fairly useless magic. Hers is a strong sense of smell. She has been shamed, embarrassed, and outcast because she is seen as week. She has forced herself to live as a wallflower only to be trampled on at every opportunity.
This all changes when her cousin, Vasilia Victoria Summer Blair is no longer satisfied with being the crown Princess. Vasilia wants the world.
Evie is forced to go into hiding and seeks out a quirky, yet Powerful gladiator Troup. She promises she will never let herself be trampled again. She will stand up for herself. She will protect those she loves. Lady Everleigh no more. Meet Evie, the black swan gladiator.
Let me tell you something? This book is SO predictable. Every step of the way . Every "twist" and "twist ending" I could have told you well before it happened. hence the 4 stars rating
But...it still didn't take away too much from my enjoyment. I still enjoyed it, still burned the midnight candle wax reading late into the night (and yes, I am very sleep deprived at work. )
Kill the Queen follows the classic guidelines of a NA fantasy book.
1. Evie earns a rocking best girlfriend who would do anything for her.
2. She has a destiny to fulfill that she doesn't fully understand. You know, vague songs fortelling the future stuff.
3. A special weapon just for her
4. Beating people far superior to her in skill by getting them by surprise.
5. An evilly evil tyrant
6. A wise (and scary) mentor who holds many secrets.
7. A love that cannot be
Again, the formulaic telling of the story didn't take away any of my enjoyment. Just made it highly predictable.
Kill a Queen gets my ringing endorsement. I jumped right in to book 2 and I'm enjoying it as well!
